Lucy on the Wild Side by Kerry Rea was such a wonderful romance between Lucy, the primate specialist at the Columbus Zoo, and Kai Bridges, a host of a popular wildlife show. Not only was this a romance, but it was a love letter to the Columbus Zoo, which was also so cute. Having been to this zoo, I could picture myself there and feel the love for the zoo and the characters as I read the book.
This is a pretty traditional enemies-to-lovers book, which I love in a romance. Lucy and Kai are constantly butting heads at the beginning of the book, but once they decide to help each other out for work-related and professional reasons only, they start to spend more time together and fall in love. It was also a bit of forced proximity, which I also like a lot!
I liked how this didn't just take place at the zoo as well. Lucy, Kai, and many of the other characters frequent other popular restaurants and bars in Columbus and its surrounding areas, such as Cafe Istanbul and Huli Huli, which I haven't been to yet but have plans to in the future.
Something I really loved about this book is how Lucy learns that her job doesn't define her worth. This is easier said than done, but I feel like in a society that puts a lot of focus on your career and what that says about you and where you are in life, this is a reminder of that. I sometimes find myself unsure of who I am outside of my job because I spend a lot of time during the week working and doing my job, but that doesn't mean that I am only my job, and neither are you, reader!
I definitely would recommend this book to anyone who loves zoos and animals or anyone who loves a romance! Have you read Lucy on the Wild Side or been to the Columbus Zoo? I'd love to hear from you!
