The food part of my blog has been really lacking, but I'm excited to make a comeback with my most recent trip to Lion Cub's Cookies! Based in Columbus, OH, Lion Cub's Cookies started as a cookie delivery shop and delivered warm, giant cookies to your door. In the last year or so, they opened a storefront, and I loved to go and get a box of cookies to celebrate an occasion or treat myself to something sweet. I was visiting Columbus during President's Day weekend, and I stopped in to try their Valentine's Day lineup!
The way Lion Cub's works is that there is a rotating weekly lineup of five cookies each week. The lineup is announced on Mondays via social media, and you can buy the cookies at any time on Tuesday through Sunday, since the store is closed on Monday. Chocolate chip and cookies and cream are always in the weekly lineup, but the cookies and cream cookie sometimes has different renditions. The Valentine's Day lineup featured chocolate chip, red velvet cookies and cream, chocolate covered strawberry, iced sugar cookie with cherry icing, and molten lava cake.
I got four cookies: red velvet cookies and cream, chocolate covered strawberry, iced sugar, and molten lava cake. I had had the chocolate covered strawberry on before, but they changed the recipe since the last time I had it, so these were all new to me!
I started with the chocolate covered strawberry cookie. I liked this version better than the original version. I liked how strongly the strawberry flavor came through, but it wasn't overpowering. The strawberries inside the cookie were the perfect size to create a different texture in the cookie but not feel like you were eating a strawberry with a cookie.
Score: 9/10
Next, I tried the red velvet cookies and cream. Usually, the original cookies and cream is very sweet for my palette, so I was wondering if this would be the same, but I was pleasantly surprised! The red velvet makes for a deeper flavor profile that doesn't take away from the cookies and cream, but it definitely feels more balanced and not as sweet as the original. Score 10/10
The classic iced sugar cookie is never a miss. I don't really like cherries, but I like cherry flavored things, so this was a no-brainer for me. I loved how the cherry icing tasted, and I think it really added to the cookie.
Score: 10/10
Last but not least, I had the molten lava cake cookie! I was looking forward to this one the most, and I liked it a lot! It reminded me of the Texas Sheet Cake cookie they had over the summer because of how rich and chocolatey it was. The ganache on the top was really good, but towards the end, I was feeling a little overwhelmed by the chocolate. However, it did live up to the name and the ganache really looked and tasted like a molten lava cake.
Score: 9/10
Since I ate these at home and not at the store, I reheated them in my microwave for 15 seconds before eating. Anything longer would burn the cookie (trust me, I've had a personal experience!).
